4ms RCD

Here's a quick video of us testing the new 4ms Rotating Clock Divider module. The RCD is triggering a few Analogue Systems rs60 EG's that are controlling a Malekko Borg, Boogie, ASys rs100 Low Pass and the Bananalogue VCS (AD style). The Analogue Systems rs200 sequencer is the master clock and is also controlling the pitch of the Anti Oscillator and it's giving us a a four on the floor kick for reference. The divisions change near the end as we introduce a slow triangle LFO from an rs80. Available soon!

Tetra MAPS, VCS, Noisering, Atoner

We're just messing around using the Tetra MAPS as a master clock/pitch source. Modules for this patch: Malekko/Wiard Borg, Boogie, Noisering, Anti Oscillator(primary osc) ; Bananalogue/Serge VCS (slewing CV from The Tetra) ; 4ms Atoner(CV mixer and secondary osc) Noise Swash for fuzziness ; Analogue Systems rs60 EG(off camera). There's some really great sounds coming out of the Anti Oscillator. Pairing it with the Borg as a low pass gate sounds super awesome. We're still amazed by the Malekko Wiard modules. Affordable and super BadA$$ sounding!

This one is still available.

Keyboard solo in Del Shannon's RUNAWAY

I found the classic 1961 Del Shannon song, Runaway, on YouTube and was blown away by the beautiful and very unusual keyboard solo sound. There is an explanation of what the keyboardist used:

"Max Crook was his organ player, playing a "Musitron" which was built from parts from a Clavioline, Viking 85 reel to reel machine, Fisher K-10 Reverb Spacexpander, a Gibson guitar amp, and several other parts and pieces."

There's also a 1986 version on YouTube of Del Shannon singing with Paul Schaeffer and the Tonight Show Band (David Letterman show). It appears that Paul Schaeffer used an Oberheim Matrix-12 for the solo work. Paul's solo is well played as you would expect, and it does sound similar. But it certainly does not have the same WOW factor to it. It never ceases to amaze me how often I find that really primitive gear, combined with creativity, just totally kicked ass.

f(h) Infernal Noise Machine Acid with Diabolical Devices 707 and friends

Too much percussion! It starts off with some drum sounds from the Diabolically modified 707. The 707 is clocking the x0xb0x 303 clone. The x0x's output is running to the mega-sweet Diabolical Devices Fuzz Burglar guitar pedal. It self oscillates and has twelve different settings for the internal oscillator as well as a momentary drop switch that lets you drop the pitch by about two octaves. The x0xb0x is also controlling the maniacal Flight of Harmony Infernal Noise Machine via control voltage. The INM has all sorts of sounds just waiting to make you sick to your stomach;) The joysticks are fun too.

Tag Team Patch 10/24/09 - Analogue Systems Frequency Shifter

Here's a little patch we drummed up with our friend Don. Bad pun, good patch. The Jomox 999 is having it's frequencies shifted! We're also using the envelope follower function from the rs35 External Processor module. The rs50 is shaping the envelope out of the rs35 so we can trigger an rs60 envelope generator more accurately. There's actually a couple of envelopes modulating the rs 240. We're also using our shaped pulse to clock the rs200 sequencer, using output A to modulate the rs240 even more. We also used a little too much Eventide 2016 Reverb but that's okay ;) Fun stuff.

Wiard / Malekko NoiseRing Anti-Oscillator Random FM Sequences

Awesomeness! The NoiseRing is controlling the pitch of the Anti Osc which is being modulated by a Cwejman D-LFO. It seems random at first then you can start to hear a structure in the chaos. The NoiseRing will repeat a sequence for while and then change to another random sequence. The sequences vary depending on the "Chance" and "Change" variables which can also be modulated externally with CV's. The Noisering is also clocking an Analogue Systems rs200 sequencer, pitch A going to the linear fm input of the AO. The rs200 is also triggering an rs60 EG which is opening the Borg filter module, doubling as a filter and VCA. FM randomadness!

Wiard / Malekko Anti Oscillator Sounds

Okay. Finally! Not a very musical sequence but we're just trying to show off all of the incredible sounds the AO does. For a second we had it sounding like a violin! You can also hear a short envelope with some serious FM'ing by the Cwejman sine. We're using just the AO, the Borg as a VCA and an Analogue Systems rs200 sequencer and rs130 PSG as a quantizer and a Cwejman sine wave for modulation. At times it sounds like there's a filter but there's not! The AO has a 1volt/octave input as well as exponential, linear and wave envelope inputs which reveals some super awesome FM sounds. For the money and high-quality build the AO is a no brainer. And it sounds fantastic!

Analogue Systems rs440 BBD Analogue Delay

Analogue Systems has just released a brand new module, the rs440 BBD Analogue Delay. This is an awesome sounding delay, utilizing a Panasonic 3011 BBD chip. Analogue Systems has done a great job keeping the price down on this voltage controllable delay. There is some clock noise at longer delay times but the use of a low pass filter after can easily rid you of it. Actually, the clock noise is pretty fun. You can use it as an effect! If you've had any experience with BBD delays you know that clock noise can be an issue. Luckily most modular users have multiple filters ;). The rs440 has two cv inputs for controlling the delay time, one with an attenuator. There's also cv in for controlling the wet dry mix. In this video we're running a simple sequence using an rs95 square wave. The output of the VCA goes into the rs440, and the rs440's out into the rs100s Low Pass Filter. This delay sounds great and the feedback and freakouts have a wonderful tone to them. We're running one of our sequencer channels into the variable cv input, sequencing the delay time. Yes. Sequencing delay time! Woohoo! We also run a medium-speed triangle LFO into the fixed time near the end, which gives the delay a nice vibrato. Cheers!

Leon, Brian and Big City Music invite you to come check out Dewanatron! The guys will be showcasing their new Dual Primate Console. The new DPC is modular in essence, making it more portable than before. There's some new features too. If you've never seen Dewanatron in action, here's your chance. This has to be one of the most fun and entertaining shows we've been to. Leon and Brian are great people and the atmosphere they create is open and friendly. This time you can join them. Bring an instrument!

SHOW DETAILS (more below)

Ghettogloss presents: The Dewanatron Experiment at Spaceland

Tuesday, Oct 13, 8:30 pm onwards

Admission: $10 at door, $8 in advance, $5 if you show up with a musical
instrument.

Dual Primate Console -Check out the nixie tubes!

Some shots from the inside of the DPC. Handbuilt... Let's see a machine do that!

In honor of Dewanatron coming to town we made a short video with the Melody Gin.

We're having some fun with the Dewanatron Melody Gin. The Melody Gin's envelope is being triggered by the Elektron Machinedrum's Impulse machine. The Impulse machine allows you to send out gate pulses which can be super handy. The Melody Gin's audio is patched into the Machinedrum and we're using a bit of the built in reverb. The Melody Gin is a truly original synthesizer, hand-built by Leon and Brian Dewan in New York. It's basically a two oscillator, four LFO synth with cross modulation, an envelope and some other really neat features like the "Slice" function.

Oh yeah. There's a cool new Dewanatron documentary you should check out by William Dickerson too.

GHETTOGLOSS PRESENTS: THE DEWANATRON EXPERIMENT AT SPACELAND

Ghettogloss presents THE DEWANATRON EXPERIMENT at SPACELAND - Tuesday, October 13th at 8:30pm! Bring a musical instrument to the show, receive a discount on the price of admission, and be a part of the groundbreaking Dewanatron Experiment at Spaceland!

"Ghettogloss presents: THE DEWANATRON EXPERIMENT" at SPACELAND, Tuesday, October 13th - featuring an extremely rare Los Angeles performance by world-renowned electronic music pioneers Brian & Leon Dewan, plus a star-studded full-band array of special guest musicians - including YOURSELF if you're so inclined!
In a groundbreaking FIRST for the legendary Spaceland, anyone can bring their own musical instrument to the show, receive a discount on the price of admission, and personally be a part of this historical event!
The New York Times calls Dewanatron "eccentric inventors and visionary entrepreneurs exploring and sharing a new, offbeat world of music, technology and homespun craft," while The Los Angeles Times raves that in Dewanatron's last mindshifting L.A. appearance, the expanded supergroup "at full roar...howled and warbled with demented mid-1960s fervor, all simple rhythms laced up with complex and freakish electronic wails, a retrofuturistic journey to the reinvention of the synthesizer" (see L.A. TIMES LINK).
Let us digress for a moment here and pose an important music-related question to you:
Do you ever wish you could go back in time and actually perform on stage with the Beatles at The Cavern Club, groove with The Velvet Underground at Max's Kansas City, be an integral player in Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable at The Factory, or personally be a part of legendary formative shows by groundbreaking, inventive artists such as, say, Radiohead, Devo, Kraftwerk, or (insert your favorite band here) at their respective historically-significant early venues?
Well, sorry, that's ridiculous, you can't.
(And if you did happen to be around at any one of those watershed musical moments and you could've actually been there, you more than likely wouldn't have even gone out that night anyway, because you probably wouldn't have found out about the show until the next morning, or you would've been too jaded, depressed, drunk, and/or high and sitting around at home watching TV and whining about how nothing cool ever happens and how everything sucks - and if a freakin' miracle occurred and you did manage to actually be there, none of those bands would've let you show up with an instrument and actually play with them anyhow...)
So now's your chance to finally be a part of musical history! Join in The Dewanatron Experiment at Spaceland, Tuesday, October 13th from 8:30 onwards! If this show doesn't eventually become legendary, at least you will have given it a shot and enjoyed an amazing Tuesday night out with a bunch of great people! And if you don't show up and participate, you just might regret it for the rest of you life...
Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door, and only $5 if you show up at Spaceland with your own instrument (random percussive objects, acoustic whatnots, strings, woodwinds, small portable keyboards, and/or/etc are welcome - anything you can reasonably carry on your person, nothing too bulky or on wheels or that will be irritating, intrusive, and/or unwieldy - all instruments subject to Spaceland and/or Dewanatron approval) to personally join in the exciting, engaging, and explosive experience of The Dewanatron Experiment!

Signal Arts Tetra MAPS Sequencer -Polyphonic Modular Patch

Yes. It's true. Not only can you create insane sequences with the MAPS but you can also use it as a four-voice polyphonic MIDI to CV converter! It works! We've patched four separate Analogue Systems mono voices, osc, adsr, vca and the outputs are mixed together. The Tetra's four sets of CV/Gate are routed to the mono voices to control oscillator pitches and trigger the envelope generators. The Tetra is great at allocating the voices. Holy cow! Polyphonic modular. The possibilities! Just make sure you have plenty of patch cords ;) In this video we
're actually using the tabetop version of the MAPS but the Euro module does it too! Please excuse the boring patch and keyboard playing. Thanks for watching!

Signal Art Tetra MAPS Sequencer in Eurorack Format

The MAPS sequencer, short for MIDI Analog Performance Sequencer, is now in Eurorack modular synth format! The Tetra MAPS is an incredibly versatile sequencer, capable of producing beautifully complex multi-channel sequences or your simple everyday sequences. The MAPS has four(!) MIDI-CV converters as well as up to 32 midi channel outputs. This short demo shows multiple sequences "chasing" each other. You can set the gate time per step, which can give you some wonderful rhythmic variation as well as some nice random melodies. By pushing the corresponding encoder, you start a particular sequence. You can start and retrigger all of the sequences multiple times too. Awesome!

We're sending our control voltages to three Analogue Systems voices, each patched a bit differently. All are using the rs95 oscillator with fine tuner. One has an rs100 Low Pass filter, one a Comb Filter, and all three mixed are running into the amazing Reverb/Chorus module.

Find them here.

Repost of video from first batch, multiple Noise Swashes!

Malekko / Wiard Noisering -As An Oscillator

We just got in these super cool new modules from Malekko! Designed by Grant Richter of Wiard and built by Malekko Heavy Industry, the Noisering rocks! Use it as a clock, noise source, oscillator, cv source and more. This is a really fun module with lots of potential and tons of features packed in.

Here were using the Noisering as an oscillator. It doesn't track one volt per octave exactly but that doesn't really matter for this type of patch. We're using the Analogue Systems rs200 sequencer to control the "Ext Rate" input. The first sound is output one of the Noisering running into the Borg Filter in low-pass gate mode, triggered by the Analogue Systems rs60 EG module. The second sound is output number 2, and yes they are very different sounding outputs! More coming soon!

Plan B Drummers

Plan B offers some alternative modules to your everyday "East Coast" style modules. In this patch we're using a multitude of different modules, including some Cwejman and Analogue Systems. The heart of this patch is the incredible sounding Model 13 Dual Timbral Gate. The M13 is in fact a low pass gate which is basically a cross between a low pass filter and a VCA. This is what gives us the beautiful, drum-like decay to the random pulses. The actual envelope is super short but the vactrols in the circuit ring longer. We're also using some random voltages in here. The Model 24 Heisenberg Generator is basically a sample and hold module, well, two of them really. The bottom section of the M24 allows you to move to the next random voltage when it receives a trigger or gate pulse. The Plan B Model 15 oscillator and the Cwejman VCO-6 are our sounds sources, each having it's frequency modulated at a high rate. This is what gives you the hand slapping sound that a typical hand drum would have. The Plan B Model 17 is also being used to great effect. The Triple Event Timer senses how hight the voltages coming in are. There are three pots to set the threshold, deciding when a pulse is allowed through. We're get more into that later.

Looking for some different sounds? Check out some Plan B stuff.

Keith Emerson and his Moog Modular

What could be cooler than meeting the man who introduced me to the incredible sound of a Moog modular synthesizer? I was just a kid when I first heard Keith Emerson's Lucky Man solo on a pair of Klipschorn speakers. That huge, otherworldly synth sound changed the way I thought about keyboard players forever.

The monster Moog modular pictured below is Keith's and it is the same one he used back in the early days with ELP. It sounded amazing when he played it at the Waves of Inspiration / Legacy of Moog event in Carlsbad last weekend.

Brain Salad Moog modulars

Janet, Stephi and I attended the Waves of Inspiration / Legacy of Moog event at the Museum of Making Music on Saturday night. We were waiting to meet Keith Emerson when we ran into Dave Smart. I remembered Dave as the only person I know who has both an Analogue Systems Bode Frequency shifter and also an original Bode Frequency Shifter.
Dave plays keyboards in an ELP cover band, Brain Salad.

Dave is the proud owner of two large Moog modular synths (a 3C & System 55). Janet and I stopped by his house on Sunday to see and hear his beautiful Moog synths. They are as you would expect - spectacular!
